Reimagining Shrimp Demand in the EU Marketplace

Shrimp in a French supermarket
Scope /
Trade statistics indicate that demand for farmed shrimp in European markets grew steadily throughout 2025, both in volume and value. While demand appears to be softening in Q1 2026, Europe remains an attractive target market for producers given the current geopolitical landscape. But what are the key trends shaping seafood and shrimp sales across Europe's diverse markets? And how does shrimp compete with other protein categories?

In this plenary session, we will reimagine the European market opportunity.

The session's Chair and Co-chair, Barbara Janker, Commercial Director Europe & Asia-Pacific at ASC, will open the discussion by outlining the European import landscape and examining the performance of key sales channels and market segments.

Ananda Roy, Senior Vice President and Industry Advisor, Consumer Goods, at Circana, a leading market intelligence company, will provide a Key Note presenting insights from retail scanning data, exploring emerging market and product trends while highlighting the key similarities and differences across markets.

Mr. Roy will then take a deeper dive into French consumer behavior, presenting findings from a GSF exclusive shopper study. What drives consumers' choice of shrimp? How is shrimp priced and perceived relative to other protein sources? And how does shrimp compare with meat, poultry, and other seafood categories? French category champions, amongst others Amyne H. Ismail, President of Unima, will respond to the findings and share their perspectives on the market.

The session will then turn to Germany, where Mr. Roy will present insights from a similar shopper study. German category champions will join the discussion to provide their views on the opportunities and challenges in the German market.

Join this session to gain a deeper understanding of consumer purchasing behavior across Europe's key shrimp markets. Discover where growth opportunities lie, how shrimp is positioned against competing proteins, and how producers can better align their offerings with evolving market demand.
