Maria Filipa Castanheira, PhD

Maria Filipa Castanheira is the Standards Manager for Health and Welfare at the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), where she works at the intersection of science, industry, and policy to advance aquatic animal welfare - with a strong focus on shrimp welfare and responsible end-of-life practices.  With a career spanning aquatic animal welfare research, industry experience, field auditing across shrimp and finfish supply chains, and consulting for organisations including NSF International, LRQA and Eurogroup for Animals. She holds a PhD in Biological Sciences with a focus on fish welfare in aquaculture and an MSc in Aquaculture and Fisheries.
